The pain relief effect of CBD seems to be related to the anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic properties of CBD and is also likely to be caused by an effect on the immune response – the inflammatory response is a major contributor to pain and is part of the immune response. CBD has been most often studied for its effects in treating pain in cancer patients. Once again, this research is still in its early stages and is still complicated by political, legal, and ideological problems. Overall, the consensus that CBD can be effective in treating certain types of chronic pain is growing. There is also a growing consensus that CBD Oil is promising – and that more studies need to be done.
The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD may be important for the effects of pain relief. As an anti-inflammatory agent, it seems to function through CB2 receptors – but also through other receptors involved in inflammation, reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines (substances that signal the immune system to increase the inflammatory response).
In addition to its pain relief effects, antispasmodic effects are seen in the effectiveness of CBD in treating certain types of epilepsy, especially children’s epilepsy and disorders such as Dravet’s syndrome (and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS)).
In fact, the cannabis strain used in the CBD Charlotte Web oil – one of the first on the market – was developed with the specific purpose of treating children – Charlotte Figi – who suffers from Dravet’s Syndrome, a form of epilepsy that cannot be treated with drugs.
Charlotte’s parents heard about children with this disorder treated with medical marijuana but did not like the idea of exposing it to THC – they found Stanley brothers in Colorado who had developed high / low-THC CBD strains and produced CBD oil.
His parents decided to try it out – and found that Charlotte’s seizures – up to 300 seizures a week – were controlled so that he currently had less than 3 seizures a month. Charlotte began to develop and grow normally – and CBD oil began to attract the interest of the community, not only because of its anti-seizure nature but because at almost the same time, many countries were legalizing medical and recreational legality.
